Will Play for Chicken Chili Soup!
December 24, 2008 at 5:52 pm (Playing Live) (Brian Keith Howard, Brian Milne, Christmas, Darwin, Darwin Mamassian, Drew Nelson, Seven Bridges, Solid Grounds, Tuesday Night Music Club)
Another rough weather day yesterday! Snow, sleet, freezing rain were on tap for Michigan on last night’s Tuesday Night Music Club open mic at Solid Grounds. Also on tap was a hot bowl of Mike’s Chicken Chili Soup!
Another very nice turnout for the weather! Ira was back. He had not shown up since around March if I remember right. Seven Bridges was there along with Darwin. Tim from the EA posse told me a friend of his was thinking of coming out. Brian Milne showed and played a great three song set. He said he was real nervous, but it didn’t show. Great job Brian! Dar and I noticed when he started playing 13 Days by JJ Cale that the opening chords and strumming are identical to Lennon’s Working Class Hero. </trivia> Kathy, Ann and a few others were there too! Great night.
Brian Keith Howard from Seven Bridges joined me for Drew Nelson’s song WalMart and one of mine, Help Me Be Good. In the “lightning round” Seven Bridges came up with me for John Denver’s Thank God I’m a Country Boy.
Glad to get a little live music in so close to Christmas. Lindsay and Dustin got in a little after I got home last night. Must’ve been a tough drive. The car was completely covered in ice. Today has been sleeting and freezing rain and now rain.
I wonder if there’s any of that soup left…

December Baseline Show
December 21, 2008 at 12:08 am (Playing Live) (Alex and Maggie Zakem, Baseline Folk Society, Better Man, Dan Yando, Drew Nelson, Mike Mullen, Nothin' All Day, Rise Again, Scott Ludwig)
Tonight – Baseline. And most of the snow has been plowed.
As usual, I spent the third Saturday of the month at Northville’s Art House for the Baseline Folk Society’s Open Mic Show. Missed last month’s when I was up in Harbor Springs at the retreat. Even after playing for a couple hours last night I was ready to go play a few tunes (Drew Nelson’s WalMart, Better Man and Nothin’ All Day) and listen to some great music.
Scott Ludwig did a great job as host. Dude has a very specific sense of humor. But, he IS a banjo player, so that explains a lot. Rise Again was the featured act and did not disappoint. We all went out to Ruby Tuesday’s after the show.
Few of the highlights for me were Dan Yando, Alex and Maggie Zakem, Mike Mullen and Maggie (apparently I needed to be on stage with Maggie too!) as well as Rise Again’s set. Denice was awesome on one of the Christmas songs she was featured on (I don’t remember which, it was just awesome, trust me). Rick Pitts came out from East River to watch. He and I sat together and chatted a bit about playing and writing. Nice guy.
Dinner afterward was the usual combination of good food and really childish behavior (well, not AS childish… Cliff wasn’t there). Memo to self: Never let my girls get into Girl Scouts (long story).
Great night! Time to get ready for the show at Zou Zou’s in Chelsea in a couple weeks.
Oh, and it’s snowing again…
Night,
J
So It Snowed Today…
December 19, 2008 at 10:42 pm (Playing Live) (Better Man, Crema Coffee, Help Me Be Good, Irish Love Song, James Humphries, Jesus and John Lennon, Motivation, Nothin' All Day, Snow, Solid Grounds, This Time)
Yesterday I heard that we were supposed to get some snow today. “Pish-posh, they always say that”. Famous last words. We got a BUNCH of snow! It started in the early morning hours and continued until early afternoon. After being the only member of the office staff (out of 10!) to show for work today, I came home early to the challenge of shoveling all that snow off my driveway and sidewalks. All the while I kept wondering if ANYONE would come to the show tonight!
Once I finished shoveling (I still believe my decision to buy a new guitar over a new snow blower was a sound one, btw), I started loading the PA into the four wheel drive Exped and then headed out. The roads were still BAD at 5pm! After playing around a little bit to get a better parking spot near the door, I unloaded to a nearly empty shop. Teresa was quietly reading a book at one of the tables and a couple were in the back on the comfy couches talking. Jim showed up and we began sound check.
For some reason, the sound check went extremely easy and felt GREAT. The tentative feeling I had last night playing was gone. Every chord was coming out right and my vocals felt strong. But would anyone be there to hear it???
By the time we started there were quite a lot of people who had braved the snow to come out. Many were Jim’s friends and family, and some were mine. A few folks continued to filter in as the night progressed. As I scanned the room while playing tonight I was so blown away by all the people that came out. My expectations from this afternoon were really exceeded.
At one point, I mentioned to the crowd how grateful I was that they came out in the snow storm. One older gentleman, a friend of Jim’s from Indiana, said “What snowstorm? This ain’t no snowstorm!” At that point, he and Lou (a regular on Tuesday nights) began to compare their epic tales of snowstorms past.
Before I started tonight I was a little concerned about filling two full hours. Never done that before. The time slipped away quickly! Jim came up for quite a few songs to feature his amazing talent and jumped up for a few to just fill in the sound. He is a very talented harmonica player, musician and a great friend. Thanks, Jim, for making it a great night.
Solid Grounds was in great form as always. Teresa and crew took good care of me and the crowd all night. She and I had a little talk as I was eating my soup before setting up. I mentioned that I had recently played at a place called Crema Coffee in Belleville and that it reminded me of Solid Grounds. She smiled and said that the owner, Martin Cobb had asked her for help when he started plans for the shop and that she gave him lots of helpful info. Small world!
Near as I can remember I got 22 songs in tonight, taking only one small break about 8:30pm to say hello to all the folks that had come in while I were playing. In addition to a bunch of covers we played a few originals: Better Man, This Time, Jesus and John Lennon, Nothin’ All Day, Help Me Be Good and Irish Love Song. Oddly, we didn’t do Love Does the Rest. We did a great take of it during sound check, but I forgot to do it again during the set! Next time! A few songs I played for the first time tonight were Take Me Home Country Roads, It’s Hard to Be Humble, Waitin’ On a Woman, What Can I Say and You and Me. Need to fill three hours at Zou Zou’s in a couple weeks, so I’m adding to the cover list! Before playing Take Me Home Country Roads I asked the crowd to help me out and sing along and they DID! Great job!
So. as I said, it snowed today. A lot! I made it into work and got my driveway shoveled. And, yes, the show went on. And people came. And it was all very good.
Night,
J
Welcome to the New Place!
December 15, 2008 at 8:21 pm (General Entry) (Arlington Station, John Natiw Music, Newsletter, Seven Bridges)
Some of you are probably seeing this blog for the first time as a result of the new John Natiw Music Newsletter. Great! Others, well, I’m not sure HOW you found this! From now on, all the news that’s fit to print will be posted here.
The truth is that over the years I’ve posted in three or four different blogs depending on which band or group I was playing with at the time. Over the past few days I’ve gone back and posted some of the entries from the Arlington Station and Seven Bridges blogs, as well as my own music blog to this new page.
After completing the move, I was pleased to be able to read through the history of the past few years. It’s been quite a lot of fun. Here’s hoping it stays that way!
There are lots of things to read as well as some pretty nifty features on this new blog. The “Tag Cloud” at left, for instance, is pretty cool. Maybe you’ll even see your name in it!
Don’t forget the show this Friday at Solid Grounds!
John
